ACUPUNCTURE: Treatment by placing filaments at specific points in the body's surface. In the 16th century catholic priests brought acupuncture from southeast asia to europe, where it has been practiced ever since. The word acupuncture was invented by a physician in Holland nearly 400 years ago.

ASIAN HEALING ARTS: Asian medicinal traditions, separate and distinct from the biomedicine of today. Encompasses traditions from many asian countries.

HEALING: Clearing obstacles so spiritual development can proceed of itself with spontaneity. In psychology, called individuation.

JING, QI and SHEN: The "3 Treasures"-- Jing is the genetic physical body, Qi is mind/emotions/psyche, and Shen is Spirit.

LIC. AC. : 'licensed acupuncturist,' independent practice of acupuncture is licensed individually by each state. Regulations vary but licensure for most is based on NCCAOM certification (see below) and diploma from an accredited college.

MOXIBUSTION: Treatment by warming acupuncture points with a smouldering stick of the herb artemesia argyi or moxa (a word that comes from the japanese, mogusa, meaning 'burning herb').

NCCAOM: acronym for National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, an independent testing agency which sets standards through its national certification examinations in acupuncture, chinese herbology and asian bodywork. NCCAOM Diplomas form the basis for licensing of independent acupuncture practice in each state.

ORIENTAL MEDICINE: A corporate-style merger of industrial biomedicine and TCM businesses.

QI: The life force in a body, especially active along CHANNELS and at POINTS.

TCM: acronym for Traditional Chinese Medicine, treatment primarily by chinese herbology with adjunctive use of acupuncture.

TTM: acronym for Traditional Tibetan Medicine, rooted in the shang shung region of western tibet, and in the medicinal herbs of the tibet region, includes treatment by medicinal herbs, gold needle acupuncture, tibetan moxibustion, ku nye massage, astrology and tibet-style prayer.
